FIFA plans to postpone this year’s Club World Cup

FIFA is reportedly planning to postpone this year’s Club World Cup competition due to hosting challenges linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Club World Cup, which is typically held at the end of the year, brings together champions from all continents and pits them against one another in a battle to determine which club can officially call themselves world champions.

Bayern Munich are the reigning holders but as a result of Chelsea winning the most recent edition of the Champions League, they’ll be the ones representing Europe – automatically making them the favourites.

After Japan pulled out of the running to host the CWC due to the pandemic, FIFA began searching for a new host. Alas, while there are reports linking Qatar with the hosting rights as a possible test run for the FIFA World Cup in 2022, the competition may not actually happen until January or February.

Will the Blues get their shot?

“FIFA is now exploring staging the event in January or February, the people told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss ongoing talks.

“FIFA is already due to stage the Arab Cup competition in December in Qatar as part of World Cup preparations.

“It will disrupt a Premier League weekend for the west London club, as would have been the case if the tournament was contested as planned in December.”

Given how congested the fixture schedule already is, it’ll be interesting to see if FIFA opts to still go ahead with the 2021 edition.
