In an exclusive interview with Sporf, the 70-year-old reminisced: “Bestie was one of the original Soccer Saturday panellists, along with Rodney Marsh, Frank McLintock, Clive Allen and Phil Thompson. By then, Bestie was front-page news rather than back-page news, but he’d been a wonderful player. I can remember him playing, and what a fantastic performer he was. I actually played against him in a charity match once. I was marking him, and he was past his heyday, but not that far past his heyday, and as he approached me, I’d unknowingly opened my legs, and of course, he nutmegged me, and by the time I’d turned around, he’d turned around and nutmegged me going back the other way. So, it was a double nutmeg.

“On the show, Bestie was pretty shy, but he was George Best. He was one of the greatest players the world has ever seen. I tell kids now: people will talk about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the best players in the world, George was up on their level for a short time — he was that good.

“When you booked George, you weren’t ever sure that he was going to turn up, so we used to have a substitute waiting just to replace George if he didn’t show. Former England captain, Alan Mullery, would come in every couple of weeks, and he would only appear if George didn’t turn up. The other couple of weeks, Nigel Spackman, ex-Liverpool, Chelsea and Rangers player, would do the same thing.

“As I say, such was George’s status, that my then boss, a brilliant fellow called, Vic Wakeling, would say, ‘I don’t care when George doesn’t turn up, he has a job as long as he wants one — a job for life’. And he did have a job for life, because he was taken from us far too soon.”
