Brighton boss Graham Potter gave a humorous warning to Liverpool over any potential transfer for midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Last week, Jurgen Klopp made a U-turn on the Reds’ transfer policy. The Liverpool boss had previously said that his side did not need a new midfielder. However, following a slow start to 2022/23 and mounting injuries, Klopp has changed his mind.
“I know we have had this discussion since it all started, and I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder. You were all right, and I was wrong,” admitted the German, via The Mirror. “That’s the situation.
“There is really nothing more to say about it. We are looking for it, and if it is the right player, we need him. And, if it is not the right player, we don’t need him.”
So, which players are reportedly on the Anfield side’s radar?
Midfield transfer targets
Two of Liverpool’s top options were Jude Bellingham and Wolves midfielder, Ruben Neves. Unfortunately, per Yahoo Sports, both of these players are not close to moving to Merseyside. For now, Dortmund and Wolves want to hold onto their stars, therefore closing down potential deals.
Elsewhere, Sky Sports suggest that Liverpool have considered moves for Sheffield United’s Sander Berge, and PSG’s Leandro Paredes. But, again, neither of these players look like signing ahead of the September 1 deadline.
One of the most substantial rumours circulated is a potential deal for RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer. Per Liverpool Echo, the Reds could pick up the Austrian international for just £25 million, as he is in the last year of his contract.
Despite this, Jurgen Klopp has also looked to the Premier League for options. Specifically, Liverpool have pursued Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo – but his current manager has something to say about that.
Graham Potter jokes about Liverpool – Caicedo transfer
Talk from various outlets suggests that the Reds are lining up a bid in the region of £42 million for the 20-year-old. In response to this price, Graham Potter gave a comedic retort.
“I think you’d probably get his boots for that, maybe, knowing the chairman,” joked Potter, via Goal. “It’s not for me to talk about, but it is what it is.
“It doesn’t surprise me that people are looking at him because he is playing at a fantastic level. As soon as you do research on him, you realise, he is a top kid, young, playing in the Premier League. He has all the attributes to play at the very highest level.
“But we know the position he is in,” continued Potter. “And we know the position the club are in, which is why we don’t want to lose him.”
The Seagulls have already lost several high-profile talents in the past few summers. Last year, they sold Ben White to Arsenal in a deal worth £50 million.
Then, this summer, Brighton lost Yves Bissouma to Spurs and Marc Cucurella to Chelsea in big-money moves. As a result of all their departures, the Seagulls have made over £100 million.
Because of this, they are not rushing to sell Caicedo, meaning Liverpool may have to pay extra for him.
