Greenwood weighs in on the Messi vs Ronaldo debate

Mason Greenwood has given his thoughts on the never-ending debate regarding who the GOAT really is – Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

For over a decade now the same conversation has been had in pub gardens, football stadiums and even between pundits: who really is the best footballer of this generation?

Some may choose to throw Neymar’s name in the hat on occasion but in reality, Messi and Ronaldo are the two frontrunners and it’s really not all that close. Barcelona’s wizard has been tearing it up both domestically and in Europe for longer than most of us can remember through skill, determination and ingenuity.

The ultimate football question

CR7, on the other hand, has gone from trickster to absolute powerhouse with the kind of goalscoring ability that almost defies logic.

They’ve both got an international trophy to their name with the European Championship and Copa America, they’ve both won a parade of Ballon d’Ors, and neither has been able to capture the World Cup.

There are many different ways to spin it but when it comes to what Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood thinks, the equation is actually pretty simple – as he noted during a fans’ Q&A session.

“For me, it’s always got to be Messi,” he said. “For me, he’s just on another planet.

“Ronaldo is obviously amazing, a physical, great athletic footballer. But to do what Messi does at his size, what he’s done for Barcelona and winning that trophy for Argentina, he is just on another level.”

Ronaldo started his career at Sporting Lisbon but his greatness became far more apparent in the latter stages of his run at Old Trafford, which is why some may be surprised to see Greenwood opt for Messi instead of the Portuguese star.

Either way, though, we should all just be honoured to say we were able to watch two of the very best in their prime.
