Harry Redknapp reveals how close he came to signing Hazard

In full flow, Eden Hazard was an absolute joy to watch.

Throughout his time with Chelsea he consistently proved himself to be one of the best players in the game, but things could have been very different.

Turns out a move to rivals Tottenham could have been on the cards, as Harry Redknapp revealed in a segment on Sky Sports’ deadline day coverage.

Redknapp revealed he had tried to pair up Bale with Hazard in 2012, when the Belgian was leaving France, coming agonisingly close to making it happen. However Chelsea winning the Champions League that season changed everything.

“We had seen him [Hazard] at Lille and he was our top target in the summer,”

“He wanted to play Champions League football and we had finished fourth, while Chelsea finished in sixth. But then, Chelsea won the Champions League and took our spot in the competition next season.”

It’s near-impossible to imagine now, but the thought of prime Hazard lining up alongside prime Bale would have been a terrifying prospect.

Of course it wasn’t to be, Hazard confirmed his move to Chelsea with a tweet that went on to become iconic in the footballing world.

Funny how things work out.
