Amir Khan knew Marcos Maidana could hurt him

On a night combat sports fans will never forget, Amir Khan travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, to take on one of the most feared boxers in recent memory.

With dynamite hands and a truly fearsome aura, Marcos Maidana was a terrifying individual, capable of rendering unconscious any opponent he faced with just a single shot.

But while that may have been the case, it didn’t stop Khan from agreeing to defend his WBA championship, against the Argentine, in a match-up that would eventually be considered his defining win.

While there were some rocky moments along the way, the Bolton-born warrior, utilized his superior hand speed and boxing IQ to pull off a historic victory, in a fight where he landed a body shot heard around the world. And to this day, Khan can’t quite believe what he accomplished.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, via Prime Casino, the former world champion, said: “One of the greatest moments of my career was fighting Marcus Maidana. I was only 22 years old then. I was a baby, if you think about it. Probably just hitting my peak and you have to understand that looking at the 22 year olds now in boxing, they are nowhere near taking those chances that I’ve taken. And a 22-year-old fighter is fighting another 22-year-old, 23-year-old fighter, both at our peaks, both dangerous, and Maidana being more dangerous with that power he had. When I fought him, he had 32 wins, 31 knockouts. That’s ridiculous! I must have been a bit crazy to walk into a fight, knowing this guy’s a beast and he can hurt me. Hard and bad.

“After that fight, I can’t remember anything, but I’m glad that body shot landed in the first half because it sort of slowed him down then and got me back in the rhythm as well, so I’m glad that happened in the first half, because it gave me a massive kick start and a boost in that fight.”
