James Rodriguez spots opponent in trouble, helps save his life with quick thinking

Former Everton star James Rodriguez is receiving widespread praise after stepping in to save the life of an opponent player.

The bloodcurdling episode happened on January 9, when Rodriguez’s Al-Rayyan faced Al-Wakrah in the QNB, Qatar’s top football league.

It’s no wonder why the Colombian midfielder is being hailed a hero. His quick thinking saved Ousmane Coulibaly from dying on the pitch after the defender unexpectedly fainted.

The tragic incident took place just before the end of the first half. Seconds after successfully defending his team’s goal from a clear chance, Coulibaly suddenly collapsed on the goal line.

James Rodriguez quickly stepped in to save Coulibaly

It was an extremely shocking moment. Completely unconscious, the Malian defender convulsed while his teammates looked away in horror.

Al-Wakrah’s goalkeeper, the player nearest to Coulibaly, was clearly unsure of what to do. Then, James Rodriguez rushed to the scene.

The Colombian sprinted towards the defender, aiding him before Al-Wakrah’s medical team took over. Coulibaly was then expeditiously moved to a hospital, where he is currently recovering.

After the game, the doctors confirmed that Rodriguez had been fundamental in saving Coulibaly’s life. By adjusting his head properly, James ensured that the Malian’s breathing stayed stable.

Not many players could have done what Rodriguez did. It’s not easy to keep calm and make sure you’re following the correct medical procedures in such a delicate moment – particularly when you’re a football player, not a doctor.

Whereas most football players would panic and flee the scene, James Rodriguez stayed to save Coulibaly’s life.

The QNB later confirmed that Coulibaly had suffered a heart attack:

“During the QNB Stars League match between Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah on Saturday, Ousmane Coulibaly suffered a heart attack which required the intervention of medical and ambulance staff present at the venue.”

Fortunately, the defender has shown signs of improvement. Aurélie Coulibali, Ousmane’s wife, provided an update on the Malian’s condition.

She wrote: “Thank you for your messages of support and love, Ousmane is in stable condition due to his heart attack, he regains consciousness slowly but surely.”

“Many thanks to God and the doctor who saved my husband’s life! Thank you for all the staff and the team of Al-Wakrah SC. I appreciate all you did for us.”
