Jamie Carragher responds to Wijnaldum’s Liverpool comments

Jamie Carragher has played down claims from Georginio Wijnaldum that he left Liverpool partially due to abuse from fans on social media.

Wijnaldum departed Liverpool after five seasons at the club upon the expiry of his contract in June, and moved to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to The Sunday Times about his departure, the 30-year-old said he “didn’t feel love” at times from the club’s supporters on social media.

He added that he was made to feel like a scapegoat when the Reds lost matches.

He explained: “There was some moment when I didn’t feel love and appreciated there. Not by my teammates, not the people at Melwood. I know they all loved me and I loved them. It was not from that side, more from the other side.

The fans in the stadium and the fans in social media were two different things. In the stadium, I can say nothing bad about them. They always supported me.

“On social media if we lost I was the one who got the blame – [claiming] that I wanted to leave.”

But Carragher has hit back at Wijnaldum’s comments, claiming that they are “not right” and that he did leave due to financial issues.

He posted on Twitter: “I love Gini but that is not right, social media is a circus & every club has clowns.

“Turn off your notifications & if it’s bothering you that much delete the app!

“He wanted more money the club said no, that’s football!”

Wijnaldum makes move to France

Wijnaldum’s move to PSG will see him play in Ligue 1 for the first time.

He has yet to make an appearance for the French club in pre-season, having spent the summer on Euro 2020 duty with Netherlands.

The club officially unveiled Wijnaldum last week, with the midfielder signing a contract until 2024.

He told PSG TV: “When Paris came to meet me, everything went well, and I quickly wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain.

“Mauricio Pochettino had already approached me at the time, to sign me for Tottenham, so I had already talked a lot with him.

“The whole club made me feel that they really wanted me, that played a big part in my decision.”
