Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has provided fans with an update on the injury status of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Back in October 2020, van Dijk suffered a nasty ACL injury when Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford clashed with him.
It brought his 2020/21 season to a premature end. It served as the first of many notable injuries for the Reds in what proved to be a really difficult campaign for them in the Premier League.
When will Virgil be back?
Klopp spoke many times throughout the season about the detrimental nature of the Dutchman’s injury and as we look ahead to their PL opener next month, many are questioning what van Dijk’s fitness is going to look like.
During a recent interview, Klopp spoke about VVD and Joe Gomez – the latter of whom also missed a large chunk of time due to injury.
“Yeah, it would still be a surprise [if they were available to play Hertha Berlin], unfortunately. But they look really good. Look, I think, they do everything, they play football, we keep them in training, we do the things we can do, they don’t do too much and stuff like this.
“We just have to be patient – we prepare for a full season, not for a pre-season game. I will not risk it for a game here, so we have to see. We have a lot of games still coming, pre-season games, but I don’t see them being involved for the next one.”
The defensive issues Liverpool have had in the last twelve months have been apparent for all to see with the red half of Merseyside holding their breath in anticipation of van Dijk’s return.
Liverpool will begin their Premier League run against Norwich on August 14.
