Jorginho touches on reason why he should win Ballon d’Or

Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho believes that if the Ballon d’Or is awarded based on trophies won, he should amongst the favourites.

The 29-year-old has won both the Champions League and Euro 2020 this year. He was named in the latter’s Team of the Tournament.

He has been touted as a potential candidate to win the Ballon d’Or after playing a starring role in each competition.

Since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in January, Jorginho was an ever-present when available in the Blues side that won the Champions League.

He also ended the Premier League season as Chelsea’s top goalscorer, netting on seven occasions.

Back in June, Italy team-mate Lorenzo Insigne said he should be in contention to win one of football’s biggest individual awards.

He said: “He had spent some fantastic years at Chelsea and I am proud to have him in our team.

“I’m not the one deciding if he deserves the Ballon d’Or but I hope he’ll be shortlisted. He deserves so, he is a great player.”

Now, the midfielder himself has had his say.

Whilst admitting that based on skill, he is not the best player in the world, he added that nobody else has won more titles this year.

He said: “We live for dreams and [Ballon d’Or] hinges on what criteria they use.

“If it is down to skill, I am not the best player in the world.

“But if it is down to who won more trophies, there is no-one who won more titles than me.”

Who is favourite to win the Ballon d’Or?

According to the bookmakers, Lionel Messi is odds-on favourite to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

Messi has just lifted the Copa America with Argentina for the first time. He has already netted 33 goals for club and country this year alone.

Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo are his closest contenders, although odds vary.

Jorginho, meanwhile, has a lowest price of 14/1 to claim the award for the first time in his career.
