Juventus has apologised after a “racist” tweet was sent out from their women’s account yesterday afternoon.
Over the course of the last twelve months, there has been a reignited push for change in the beautiful game when it comes to racial abuse. From taking the knee to the show of solidarity to any players suffering from these attacks, it’s clear to see that a flame has been lit with regards to this subject matter.
“We sincerely apologise”
Alas, there’s still a long way to go, and there are also plenty of clubs in world football that need to improve their own standards – whether it be on social media or in their day-to-day operations.
One league that has struggled in recent years with subjects such as these is Serie A, and yesterday, the Juventus Women’s Twitter account had a lot to answer for with the following tweet that was eventually deleted.
The club then put out the following statement to apologise for what had happened.
“We sincerely apologise that our tweet, which was not meant to cause controversy or have any racial undertones, may have offended anyone.
“Juventus has always been against racism and discrimination. #DifferencesMakeTheDifference.”
Juventus are currently in Barcelona for the Joan Gamper Trophy that will, for the first time, feature a women’s game alongside the men’s. The photo in question was taken during a training session and was present on the club’s website for over an hour before subsequently being removed.
