On Saturday night, Lawrence Okolie will collide with David Light in a blockbuster encounter, and we’re telling you exactly how to watch the action.
In the early portion of his career, ‘The Sauce’ struggled to come into his own. Despite rocketing his way towards the British title, fans complained about his awkward style. But ignoring the doubters, the Londoner continued to hone his craft, knowing he had all the ability to become a world champion. And in a statement performance, he rendered Krzysztof Głowacki unconscious with a brutal shot to complete one of the greatest fairytale stories in boxing history, summarised by a beautiful piece of commentary from Adam Smith, who eloquently beamed: “From flipping burgers in McDonald’s to flipping the cruiserweight division on its head.”
Since his rise to the top, he’s done away with previous criticism, showcasing his lightning hands and devastating power. But while many view the powerhouse as the number one in the weight class, the man who’s coming to take the belt off him this weekend will likely give him all he can handle.
Earlier this week, a video of Light hitting the pads resulted in criticism from the fans. However, upon closer inspection, these comments appear somewhat misplaced. Granted, the New Zealander holds his hands low, opening himself up to the champion’s dynamite power, but that didn’t stop him from overcoming 20 other opponents.
David Light believes he can beat Lawrence Okolie
In reality, the Kiwi has all the tools to cause the upset. In a successful amateur career, he boxed around the globe, picking up a silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. And upon turning over, he proved he had the style to make it to the top of the professional game.
It didn’t take him long to establish his place as the number one in his country. But to really show his class, he had to travel overseas. In the best victory of his career, he triumphed over undefeated American, Brandon Glanton, in a massive contest in Florida, USA.
Through the victory, he not only picked up the WBO International and Global titles, but also established himself as the organisation’s mandatory challenger. And while he undeniably goes into this weekend’s bout as the underdog, he’ll hope his gritty inside fighting style will be enough to achieve his lifelong dream.
Therefore, this is a collision that fans can’t afford to miss.
