Lee Sharpe wants Manchester United to sign Harry Kane and Frenkie de Jong

In an interesting interview, Lee Sharpe revealed a trio of players that he believes could make an impact at Manchester United.

Firstly, the Old Trafford legend emphasised that ‘The Red Devils’ need to secure the services of a new number 9.

He told NewCasinoUK: “I still think they need a striker as Martial is a little bit more injury prone than you’d like, but I do like Martial – on his day, he can be unplayable, and he scores goals, holds the ball up well and does all the right things, but he does get injured, and you do need that other option with Ronaldo gone. I’d like to see Rashford up as a number 9, but I think they could do with a goal-scoring number 9 that can replace Martial if he’s injured or the game takes a turn and needs something a little bit different.”

And who better to bring in than England’s joint-record goal scorer?

Asked about who would be his first choice, Sharpe replied: “I suppose Harry Kane would be top of the list – if he would ever leave Tottenham. But then, if he does come, Martial isn’t going to get a game which would means you’d lose Martial and you’d need someone else. So I’m not really sure who could come in, because I don’t think they’re going to be number one choice, as I think the manager likes Martial, so to replace Martial potentially lose Martial, it’s a difficult one.”

But regardless of whether United can secure a new striker or not, the Old Trafford icon is insistent that his former club still need to bolster their midfield.

Lee Sharpe wants Manchester United to secure the services of Frenkie de Jong

While the Manchester club failed to convince the Dutch playmaker to make the switch to the Premier League in the summer, Sharpe thinks that they should have another bite of the cherry.

He claimed: “I think he’s an unbelievable player and is one of those that can get the ball on the edge of his own box, turn and beat someone and turn defence into attack in a matter of three seconds. There’s not many people in the Premier League or in football that can do that consistently and do it as well as he does. He is a phenomenal player in transition. I think you’d put hum in the category with people like De Bruyne. Casemiro is a top-quality player, but the type of player to get the ball on the edge of the box, beat one or two and slide someone in for a chance on goal like De Jong is. I think he’d be an unreal addition to the team.”

Furthermore, with David De Gea’s future in doubt, Sharpe believes that United should target controversial World Cup star, Emi Martinez.

The 51-yar-old claimed: “You’ve got to remember that all goal-keepers are a bit different to most people – playing a different position, with different pressures, and he’s played in one of the biggest games in the world and maybe overreacted a little bit, but I wouldn’t take away from what he’s done and what he’s achieved – I think he’s saved more penalties at a world cup than anybody, had a really good world cup, and I think he’s a really good keeper and I think he would be good for United. I know there are question marks over De Gea, so maybe he would be decent to come in, and we certainly know that he can cope under pressure.”
