Lionel Messi calls Emi Martinez one of the best goalkeepers in the world

Lionel Messi has called his fellow countryman Emiliano Martinez one of the best goalkeepers in the world after another strong international showing.

From his exploits at this year’s Copa America to what he’s been able to produce for Aston Villa, it’s safe to say Emi Martinez has proven himself in more ways than one since leaving Arsenal.

The 29-year-old is easily one of the most important names on the teamsheet for both club and country and as time goes on, he just seems to be going from strength to strength with his prime as a goalkeeper likely being a few years away.

His confidence and composure both on and off the ball makes him a great player to be around which, unsurprisingly, was on full display last night when Argentina beat Uruguay 3-0 to move one step closer towards World Cup qualification.

One of the best in the game?

The dominant nature of the scoreline suggests it was all one-way traffic but if it wasn’t for a handful of impressive saves from Martinez, including two remarkable stops from Luis Suarez in the first half, the result could’ve been very different indeed.

One man who appreciates and understands that fact is Lionel Messi who, after getting on the scoresheet himself on Sunday, took some time in a post-match interview to heap praise on Villa’s number one.

“Dibu [Emiliano] Martinez is fundamental,” said Messi.

“When they come to him, he always responds. He established himself in goal and we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”

In terms of his Premier League work, Martinez already has three clean sheets to his name this season for a Villa side that’s finally starting to come into its own.

The road to Qatar continues for Argentina when they host Peru on Friday.
