It was a mixed night at the office for Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday and that’s especially true for their new star man Lionel Messi.
Ever since making his way over from Barcelona during the summer transfer window, there’s been a lot of anticipation surrounding Messi’s run in French football and what it’s going to look like. Now that we’re a few games in there’s more room for analysis and thus far, it hasn’t exactly been exemplary for the Argentine sensation.
Too soon to panic?
He hasn’t been able to hit the back of the net as of yet and while he may have had some nice moments, including hitting the woodwork against Lyon last night, the expectations are always going to be higher for this special 34-year-old – especially when the majority are comparing him to his rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
In the aforementioned Lyon clash, it was clear to see PSG needed a change of pace but few could’ve imagined that manager Mauricio Pochettino would sub Messi off in favour of Achraf Hakimi.
Messi gave a quick glance to Pochettino before heading to the bench, stopping briefly to have a word with his fellow countryman.
Neymar’s successful penalty and Mauro Icardi’s late winner should mean fewer people are talking about what happened with Leo, but we all know this is a guy who could make headlines just by popping down to the local off licence for some crisps.
PSG are top of Ligue 1 with a 100% record but you can bet all eyes will still be on Lionel Messi in the weeks and months to come – especially in the Champions League.
