Why Liverpool fans feel aggrieved club announced Henderson contract on deadline day

Liverpool have announced that club captain Jordan Henderson has signed a four-year contract extension with the club, in what looks likely to be their only piece of deadline day business.

The Reds have not spent heavily in this summer transfer window, with the £30 million signing of Ibrahima Konate their only addition to the senior squad.

On the outgoings front, Georginio Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri have departed to Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon respectively.

When asked about whether Liverpool would do any late business, manager Jurgen Klopp said: “Do I expect a busy four days for us? Not really to be 100 per cent honest, but you never know.

“That’s how it is. The options didn’t get worse for some teams, that’s clear, but in the end, I said it a couple of times before, there are so many different reasons to win a football game and so many different ways to win a football game and it’s not all about bringing in new players and all this kind of stuff.”

Liverpool’s focus has instead been on renewing the contracts of their key players. Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Fabinho have all signed extensions so far this summer.

Henderson was added to that list today, with the midfielder agreeing a new deal until 2025.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m obviously very honoured and proud to continue the journey I’ve already been on here.

“It’s amazing to finally get it done and just concentrate on looking forward and what the future may hold.

“I’m in a different place of course, as a player and as a person, from when I first walked in, I’ve learned a grown a lot over my time here, and I’ve got to thank a lot of people for that.”

Whilst Liverpool fans are universally delighted at seeing their captain remain at the club, some have realised that the announcement will likely be the only piece of business that is confirmed from Anfield today.

Other fans, however, solely talked up the merits and importance of having so many key players committed to the club.
