If you’ve ever seen the hit football film Goal, then we’re pretty sure you’ll be a fan of Newcastle United’s latest transfer.
Back in 2005, the release of “Goal!” changed how football was portrayed on the big screen forever. The premise followed the story of a talented young Mexican immigrant who, upon being spotted by a former scout, was eventually offered the chance to sign for Newcastle United.
Munoz – not Munez – heads to Tyneside
The man was known as Santiago Munez and after an average performance at the box office, Goal quickly turned into a cult classic with many fans of the beautiful game fondly remembering the story of “Santi” and his rise to prominence in the trilogy.
Now, in the present day, Newcastle have signed 19-year-old Santiago Munoz from Santos Laguna.
Whether or not he’ll become a Magpies hero in the same manner that Munez did in the fictional world of Newcastle upon Tyne remains to be seen, but based on the reports that have come out about his overall potential, there’s definitely cause for excitement with respect to this deadline day deal.
If there’s any chance he’s ready in time to feature against Manchester United on September 11, you can bet neutrals will be joining those in the Old Trafford away end in hoping that Munoz can get off to the perfect start – ideally with a free-kick straight out of Munez’s playbook.
