Liverpool reinvents 90s Classic with new 2023/24 away kit

Liverpool have reimagined one of their classic alternate strips from the 90s to create an interesting look for their new 2023/24 away kit.

Shirt supplier, Nike, has been unafraid to produce daring away strips for the Reds throughout their three-year partnership, and this season is no different. However, the American marque has created a 21st-century re-hash of a kit from rival brand Adidas for 2023/24.

A white base shirt houses two “squares” of green – one at the top right of the shirt, one on the bottom left, dividing it into quarters. This is immediately reminiscent of Adidas’ 1995/96 Liverpool away kit that was popular with fans.

Nike has changed it up slightly, though, with various shades of green adding a digital print effect to the kit. Meanwhile, a black, round collar and black sleeve cuffs break up the bright ensemble. Nike opted to go for black branding on all logos and sponsors, which provides a nice contrast, too.

Liverpool will take to the pitch in this vibrant shirt wearing black shorts and white socks.

Now, the new kit has certainly divided the fanbase online. Some think the kit is garish, with others jokingly comparing it to the popular video game, Minecraft. Despite this, there are some supporters that do enjoy this fresh look.

The 2023/24 away kit is not the first time that Liverpool have reinvented this same 1995/96 shirt, though.

Green and white has been a common change-up look in the Merseyside club’s history. Adidas first introduced green as an outfield colour in 1991/92, and it returned on many strips from this point.

However, 1995/96 was the first time we saw green and white quarters on a Liverpool shirt. This was the infamous kit from the 1996 FA Cup Final, where the Reds lost 1-0 to bitter rivals Manchester United. The strip did not get re-used in the following season.

Despite this, New Balance took inspiration from the 1995/96 effort when they made the 2017/18 Liverpool kit. Their mostly white alternate shirt had thin green stripes to create quarters on the jersey. Although, the US brand did switch the colour placement around compared to the 90s look.

Now, Nike has shown their take on the quartered Liverpool kit. But when will Jurgen Klopp’s side debut the new strip?

Reds confirm first outing for new kit

Alongside their kit release, the Merseyside club announced that their new gear will be used on their pre-season tour.

Liverpool will wear their new 2023/24 away kit in Singapore for a match against Leicester City. This will be on Sunday 30 July, as part of the Reds’ preparation for next season.

The game against the Foxes is one of two matches that Liverpool will play in Southeast Asia. Three days later, on 2 August, the Reds play Bayern Munich at Singapore’s National Stadium – the same site as their clash with Leicester.
