Luke Shaw reacts to his new ‘Shawberto Carlos’ nickname

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has laughed off social media comparisons between himself and legendary full-back Roberto Carlos.

The 25-year-old has been in impressive form for United this season and has firmly established himself as the club’s number one full-back after the arrival of Alex Telles last summer. He has made 27 appearances in the Premier League this season.

Shaw has been an effective presence in both defensive and attacking areas.

It is his record in the latter area that has received attention, with Shaw having struck home United’s second goal in a 2-0 victory over local rivals Manchester City last month.

He has also earned an England recall this season.

All that has led to some fans dubbing him ‘Shawberto Carlos’ on social media, in reference to the Real Madrid legend.

Carlos scored 69 goals during a 21-year professional career, with 47 of those arriving whilst representing the Spanish giants. The Brazilian is considered one of the greatest left-backs of all-time.

Shaw said that he has laughed with friends about the nickname, and added that he can’t be compared with Carlos.

He told United’s official website: “I’ll be honest I’ve seen some things on it on social media and sometimes in my group chats my mates send me some stuff and I just laugh about it!

“I can’t be compared to him, he was unbelievable!

“I’m aware of it and it’s nice to be even mentioned alongside his name, but I just laugh about it!”

As part of the fan Q&A published by United, Shaw was asked to give his opinion on who he thought was the best left-back of all-time.

In response, he chose former Arsenal, Chelsea and England left-back Ashley Cole.

He explained: “I think, looking back at when I was growing up and my sort of era, and watching him a lot and basing my game a lot on him and what I wanted to be like as a player, then I would have to say Ashley Cole.

“I’ve always been a massive fan of him and thought, when I was growing up, he was one of the best left-backs at that time.

“For me, as an all-round full-back he was one of the best I’ve ever seen with attacking and defending.”
