Maguire recalls being knocked out by Ravel Morrison in 2011 final

Harry Maguire has spoken about how he was once knocked out when he collided with Ravel Morrison as the pair contested a header during the 2011 FA Youth Cup Final.

Maguire’s Sheffield United side were taking on Manchester United in that year’s final, with the Red Devils going on to win 6-3 on aggregate.

Back in 2019, the 28-year-old posted the team sheets from the second leg of that final, with Manchester United’s side featuring current Premier League regulars Sam Johnstone, Michael Keane, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

Morrison – who heavily impressed and scored twice during the match – was also named in the starting XI that evening, and Maguire recalled an unfortunate incident that occurred between himself and the midfielder during the encounter.

Speaking to The Overlap with Gary Neville, the current Red Devils captain told of how he was knocked out when both he and Morrison went up for a header – and had to go straight to hospital.

He said: “I was good for the youth team, we got to the Youth Cup Final against Manchester United, whose team was ridiculous back then.

“I think I got a one year pro [contract] but then straight away in that one year pro I started to play, so I think things developed from there.

“I actually got knocked out in the second leg [of the final]. We drew the first leg and then the second leg, I went up for a header and I got knocked out with Ravel Morrison.

“I went straight to hospital. I was there for a few hours and then I think it was about three days later I received a shirt from Manchester United, so no that was really touching.

“I’ve still got the shirt, a really, really classy moment and I think it shows the classy club as well.”

Maguire’s rise through the ranks

Maguire completed the 2010/11 season as a first team regular for Sheffield United, featuring in the last five games.

The Blades ended the campaign with relegation to League One. Maguire would go on to play more than 40 games in each of the following seasons, before making the move to then-Premier League side Hull City in 2014.
