Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has officially announced that he is retiring from the sport of professional boxing, 26 years on from his pro debut.
After generating over $1 billion in pay-per-view sales, holding world titles in four different decades and winning gold across eight different divisions, “Pac-Man” is finally hanging up his gloves once and for all as he prepares to ride off into the political sunset.
Pacquiao retires with a record of 62-8-2 having lost his last bout to Yordenis Ugas back in August. He’s fought some of the very best of both his generation and eras gone by, and now is seemingly the time for him to bow out in favour of allowing fresh stars to make their way up through the ranks.
One of the greatest
Manny posted the following statement on social media confirming his decision after much speculation surrounding his future.
“To the greatest fans and the greatest sport in the world, thank you! Thank you for all the wonderful memories. This is the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but I’m at peace with it. Chase your dreams, work hard, and watch what happens. Good bye boxing.”
The next step on Manny Pacquiao’s journey will see him attempt to go from senator to president in the 2022 Philippine presidential election. The 42-year-old formally announced his intention to run on September 19 and will serve as a nominee within the PDP–Laban party.
Whether you’re a hardcore fan, a casual or you’ve just heard his name in passing, everybody knows about Manny Pacquiao and understands what a tremendous legacy he leaves behind.
