Mason Greenwood set to replace Lionel Messi in shock Barcelona transfer

In a move that would send shockwaves through the sport of football, Barcelona is eyeing up a move for Mason Greenwood, with the disgraced Manchester United star set to take the shirt number previously worn by Lionel Messi.

According to The Sun, the Spanish giants are set to offer £40 million for the controversial footballer. Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault, following the release of a harrowing audio tape that allegedly captured a conversation between him and his girlfriend, in which he refused to accept her refusal to engage in intimate activity.

After initially pondering the idea of bringing the striker back into the squad, United received such a massive backlash from disgusted fans, including TV star Rachel Riley, who claimed she’d give up supporting the club if he made his return, that the Premier League side concluded, following an internal investigation, that it would be best if the forward played his football elsewhere, sending him on loan to Getafe.

Reports claim that the 22-year-old is open to extending his spell in Spain beyond this season, with a move to Barca in his sights. The La Liga side will supposedly make their move for Greenwood in the summer.
