Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic trolled Portugal pair Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo over their side’s last-minute disallowed goal against Serbia on Saturday.
Portugal were drawing 2-2 with Serbia in a World Cup qualifier when Ronaldo was on hand to meet a long pass from Nuno Mendes.
The ball went beyond the goalkeeper but was then cleared away by defender Stefan Mitrovic, who had managed to get back to the goalline.
Ronaldo began to wheel away in celebration, believing he had scored the winner, but the officials deemed the ball to have not crossed the line.
However, replays clearly showed that the ball had crossed the line. VAR is not in operation during the World Cup qualifiers, so the decision could not be overturned.
Ronaldo reacted furiously at the decision to disallow his goal, immediately remonstrating with the assistant referee on the touchline. He was then booked for his reaction.
“Is it all clear now?”
Matic – who is team-mates with Fernandes at United – joked about the incident on Instagram after the game.
Pausing the match footage precisely before Ronaldo’s effort crossed the line, he posted the words: “Just on the line. Is it all clear now?”
He tagged both Fernandes and Ronaldo in the post.
In a separate Instagram post addressing the disallowed goal, Ronaldo said: “I always give and will give everything for my country, that will never change.
“But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel that an entire nation is being harmed.
“We will keep our heads up and face the next challenge now.”
Portugal’s next challenge occurred on Tuesday evening, when they faced Luxembourg.
Despite conceding a shock lead to their opponents, Fernando Santos’s side bounced back to win 3-1, with Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet.
Portugal top their World Cup qualifying group with seven points from three games played.
