Widely regarded as one of the finest sports commentators around, Peter Drury was in fine form once again following Real Madrid’s dramatic Champions League semi-final victory.
Since starting his career in TV in 1998, Drury has blessed viewers with iconic commentary pieces in many sports. Whether it is the World Cup, the Premier League, the Champions League or the FA Cup, the man with the mic always knows just what to say.
Renowned for his incredible monologues, the poetic words of Peter Drury have enhanced big moments into legendary pieces of history.
Peter Drury: pure poetry
Nothing better exemplifies the commentator’s mastery than his monologue over Roma’s famous victory over Barcelona in 2018. After losing 4-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, the Italian side won 3-0 at home to go through on away goals.
Roma achieved this in the most dramatic circumstances – a late header from Greek defender Kostas Manolas.
“Roma have risen from their ruins,” boomed Drury over the celebrations. “Manolas, the Greek God in Rome! The unthinkable unfolds before our eyes. This was not meant to happen; this could not happen … this is happening!
“It is a Greek from Mount Olympus, who has come to the seven hills of Rome and pulled off a miracle.”
This incredible piece of commentary immortalised Manolas’ goal in one of the great Champions League comebacks in recent memory.
Similarly, the 2010 World Cup gave fans some magic soundbites. Commentating on the opening game, Drury exploded into life as hosts South Africa took the lead.
“It’s Tshabalalaaaa! Goal, Bafana Bafana! Goal for South Africa, goal for ALL Africa! Jabulina, rejoice! Bafana Bafana have popped the first cork, on their day of days!”
The delivery and word selection captured the event’s magnitude, as South Africa scored the first goal in their World Cup. Furthermore, it was the first World Cup ever hosted on African soil. No one could have put an enormous moment much better than Drury.
Last night, he delivered another classic.
Reaction to Real Madrid’s comeback
The British commentator was on the US network CBS Sports’ coverage of Real Madrid versus Manchester City. Madrid unbelievably came back in injury time against the visitors before going through to the final after extra time.
As ever, Peter Drury was prepared with some classic commentary.
“The night of the Real resurrection! The pure white shirts have shimmered spectacularly once again…and Real Madrid are Paris bound!
“Real Madrid will play the big game again. The love affair goes on! Improbably, miraculously, impossibly, beyond their dreams or expectations!
“For the seventeenth time, this club of glitz and legend will go to the final of the European Cup.”
The video clip of the post-game celebrations is truly must-watch to really do it justice.
CBS Sports viewers are lucky to have him, aren’t they?
