Ramy Bensebaini has received an onslaught of criticism for his performance in the second leg of Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League play-off against Atalanta.
Renowned for his cool composure on the ball, strong tackling ability, overlapping skills and overall footballing IQ, the Algerian is undoubtedly an important player for his club.
However, there’s no denying that tonight was not his finest display.
Ramy Bensebaini slammed for Champions League errors
Tonight, BVB travelled to the New Balance Arena in Bergamo, Italy, with the intention of dumping Atalanta out of the competition.
Having won the first leg by a scoreline of 2-0, it seemed almost a foregone conclusion that the Bundesliga giants would secure a spot in the last 16. However, things quickly went astray.
Five minutes in, Ramy Bensebaini failed to clear a cross, giving Gianluca Scamacca a chance to pounce to bag his club’s first goal. Then, just before half-time, an effort from Davide Zappacosta deflected off ‘Die Schwarzgelben’ right-back and into the back of the net.
After a third goal from the home side, Dortmund hit back, leaving the game balanced on a knife-edge at 3-3 on aggregate. Then, in the seventh minute of added time, Bensebaini got himself sent off, resulting in a penalty, which Lazar Samardžić converted to send the 1997 champions crashing out of Europe.
Of course, fans were quick to take to social media to slate the gifted player.
One person wrote: “One of the worst individual performances in years by a BVB footballer. Ramy Bensebaini has already had his fair share of poor showings, but this one will go down in history.
While another added: “Ramy Bensebbaini, a right clown from start to finish.”
A third conceded that while not the athlete’s finest moment, he hopes the defender manages to make things right very soon, writing: “I reckon that’s the worst match of Ramy Bensebaini’s professional career. He was off the boil from start to finish during that match, unfortunately. He went from being the hero of the first leg to a complete nonentity in the return leg. I hope he bounces back straight away in the next match.”
