Referee has nightmare after blocking goal-bound shot

It’s happened plenty of times over the years where referees have been seen inadvertently blocking passes and tackles.

Mexican referee Oscar Macias, however, was even more unlucky when he accidentally blocked a goal-bound shot.

The incident occurred during a Liga MX game between Cruz Azul and Toluca, where the hosts had gone 2-0 up after half an hour.

Jonathan Rodriguez opened the scoring on seven minutes, before midfielder Roberto Alvarado added a second goal on 27 minutes.

However they could have been three goals to the good if it wasn’t for a series of unfortunate events.

Firstly, Luis Romo rounded the goalkeeper and hit the post from a tight angle.

Rodriguez’s effort on the rebound then struck the heel of referee Macias, who had followed play and entered the penalty area, before going behind for a goal kick.

Another look at the footage shows that perhaps the referee’s blushes will be spared somewhat, given the presence of a defender on the line.

Whatever your conclusions are, though, it is unlikely to be an incident that Macias will want to watch back too many times in the future.

Take a look at the referee’s unfortunate incident for yourselves below:

Toluca quickly pressed on and forced their way back into the game, levelling the scores before half-time. Miguel Barbieri struck in the 44th minute, before league top scorer Alexis Canelo equalised from the penalty spot for the visiting side.

Cruz Azul were not be to denied all three points, however, with Guillermo Fernandez’s second half strike sealing a 3-2 victory. It is their fifth win in a row in all competitions.

Juan Reynoso’s side sit in second position in Liga MX after seven games, one point behind leaders Club America. They travel to Club Leon on Saturday.
