Former defender Rio Ferdinand has come up with an interesting anecdote for the current state of Arsenal Football Club.
The Gunners, who are in action later this week in the Europa League, are coming off the back of a 1-1 draw against Burnley. Some fans have noted how unlucky they were but others have questioned their killer instinct.
It’s a double-edged sword that manager Mikel Arteta needs to deal with. On one hand we can see the progress he’s made but on the other, there’s still a long way to go.
The result left 10th place Arsenal, eight points off of Everton in sixth. A long way off where the Arsenal hierarchy likely want to see the club.
One man who had his fair share of run-ins with Arsenal over the years is the aforementioned Ferdinand. During a recent edition of his Vibe With FIVE podcast, Rio had some interesting words when speaking about the issues in play.
“If [Bukayo] Saka’s not doing it, Arsenal haven’t performed this year.
“But Arteta must look at the squad like a promiscuous girlfriend. He just must lack so much trust and faith in them. He can’t trust them at all, because he doesn’t know what’s going to happen at the moment.”
Arsenal have won just two of their last seven games in the Premier League.
“He could do the best team talk of his life but they’re going to go out there and do their own thing and it doesn’t seem to be coming together.”
It has been widely covered how inconsistency lies at the heart of Arsenal’s problems, an issue that had been associated with the club way before Arteta took over. Wenger’s latter years saw the club often playing some incredible football, only to counteract it with a poor performance a week later.
Whether the current coach can shake that habit, remains to be seen.
