Roberto Carlos has once again reiterated his praise for Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.
In the midst of his prime it’s safe to say Roberto Carlos was the best left back in the world. From his attack-minded approach to his sensational free kicks and beyond, we’re talking about a man who was head and shoulders above his peers outside of perhaps a few other world class stars.
One man who has been affectionately referred to as “Shawberto Carlos” over the course of the last few months is none other than Luke Shaw. The Manchester United and England star is coming off the back of a tremendous tournament at Euro 2020 with many believing he was one of the Three Lions’ protagonists in their run to the final.
Shaw’s biggest fan?
On that night at Wembley he even managed to open the scoring, and while England weren’t quite able to overcome Italy and lift the trophy, they gave the nation a summer that none of us will ever forget.
During a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Carlos gave his thoughts on Shaw’s nickname and England’s future.
“I watched the entire Euros and the England team played really well. Losing is part of the game, part of football, and I really do hope that they can do well at the World Cup. If they can keep these standards up they deserve to win a trophy.
“[Laughs] He [Luke Shaw] was the best player in the tournament. He has to keep it up; he has to continue playing like that. That’s important.”
Keeping up that form will be easier said than done but at this moment in time, there aren’t many fullbacks who can match up to Shaw.
The attention now turns to the start of Manchester United’s Premier League campaign as they prepare to host Leeds United on August 14.
