EXCLUSIVE: Sergio Aguero solidified his legacy by scoring an injury-time goal to win the 2011-12 Premier League season for Manchester City.
The finish sent shockwaves around the world, with fans far and wide absolutely stunned by the drama on display.
But what was it like to be on the pitch when it actually happened?
Jay Bothroyd reflects on epic Sergio Aguero goal
Like Sergio Aguero, Jay Bothroyd also knew how to find the back of the net. However, on the final day of the campaign, their teams were in very different positions, with the Londoner, who was playing for QPR at the time, desperately trying to remain in England’s top flight while the Argentinian was looking to make history.
Unsurprisingly, Bothroyd, can remember the moment the ball hit the back of the net like it was yesterday.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, he reminisced: “I was with Martin Tyler not so long ago, and we were talking about that. It was an unbelievable moment. What people need to understand is the magnitude of the game. We were fighting to avoid relegation, and Manchester City were fighting Manchester United for the title. Earlier on in the season, we played Manchester City and it was a really close game, I think we lost 3-2 in that game as well.
“We felt that we could get at them, and we did. Obviously, Joey Barton got that red card, and in that moment, it was all doom and gloom, but in actual fact, because of how it happened, and there was so much extra time, all the other games finished, and our game was still going on. Because there was so much pressure on the game, I remember Mark Bowen came out of the dugout and was like, ‘We’re safe’. Only a few players knew, and I was one of them because I was at the halfway line where the managers were. It was jubilance.
“Being under pressure for the better part of six months in a season to now being safe and staying in the Premier League was amazing. It was a fantastic game, great to be a part of. I was part of history. Aguero, he wrote himself into the history books with that goal. It was one of those moments in my career that was amazing to be a part of.”
Jay Bothroyd discusses his fascinating experience with Paolo Maldini
Witnessing Aguero’s thunderbolt of a strike isn’t the only crazy experience Bothroyd has had in his career.
During his time with Perugia, the natural-born goal scorer, went head-to-head with an AC Milan side featuring Paolo Maldini.
Following the game, the Italian superstar went out of his way to chat with the Brit.
During his interview with Sporf, Bothroyd opened up about what Maldini said to him.
