EXCLUSIVE: In the moments before scoring a goal that Manchester United fans will remember forever, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had an interesting conversation with a fellow icon.
In the 93rd minute of the 1999 Champions League final, the Norwegian superstar put the ball in the back of the net to cement his legacy as one of the greatest strikers the game has ever seen.
Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conversed right before Champions League winning goal
With time almost gone, Manchester United’s attempt at a second European championship looked like a failure, with Bayern Munich seemingly cruising towards victory.
However, while many a team would’ve accepted the reality that their hopes and dreams had not come to fruition, under Sir Alex Ferguson, the English side simply refused to give in.
With the game deep into injury time, hope looked bleak, but United kept on pushing, securing an all-important corner. In a moment of madness, the ball fell at the feet of an opportunistic Teddy Sheringham, who fired it past the goalkeeper.
Understandably euphoric, the natural-born goal scorer ran over to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the pair sharing an interesting conversation.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, via Free Bets, Sheringham explained: “When I scored the equaliser, we walked back to the halfway line arm in arm, saying to each other, ‘This is unbelievable, we’re in the Camp Nou, it’s a beautiful night, look at the pitch, it’s stunning, our fans are here, and we’ve just got back into this game. We’re gonna have another half an hour of this, great, ay’? And it was like, ‘Yeah, can’t wait’.
“Little did we know, two minutes later, we’d scored again, Ole had scored, and we’d won the Champions League.”
Throughout his career, the Englishman played alongside many a great striker, with Sheringham recently opening up about his favourite memories with Alan Shearer. However, he’ll never have a bond with anyone quite like he did with Solskjaer.
On an evening in which United fans were on the cusp of devastation, the pair came off the bench and created possibly the most significant moment in the history of the club. And for that, the supporters will be eternally grateful.
