Teenage Afghan footballer dies falling from plane after fleeing country

A young footballer from Afghanistan has died after falling from a plane leaving Kabul.

The world has been left in a state of shock over the course of the last few days after it was confirmed that Kabul had fallen into the hands of the Taliban. The group had been mounting an offensive over the course of the last few weeks with the expectation now being that they will form an entirely new government, 20 years on from the invasion of the United States.

Rest in peace, Zaki Anwari

There has been an outpouring of support and grief over social media from across the globe with many being left to wonder where the nation goes from here. Heartbreakingly, though, we’ve also seen some devastating videos and images – with one example being the shot of Afghan civilians desperately clinging to planes as they leave the airport in Kabul.

A series of people were shown to have fallen to their death, and as it turns out, one of those individuals was 19-year-old Zaki Anwari who was a member of the Afghanistan national youth team.

The following is one of the many tributes paid to Anwari in the wake of his passing.

“It is with great sadness that Zaki Anwari, one of the players of the national junior football team of the country, died in a bad accident.

“The late Anwari among hundreds of young people who wanted to leave the country, fell down in an accident from the air, the US military message fell down and lost his life.

“The Afghan Sports Society of this known incident for Zaki Anwari, may he rest in heaven and pray to God for his family, friends and sports colleagues.”
