The reason Man City star Phil Foden has a dog called ‘Carabao’

Many enjoy the Carabao Cup and Manchester City star Phil Foden certainly does.

The competition, best known to many as the League Cup, has offered up the opportunity for Phil Foden to really shine in City’s first team. From his first senior goal against Oxford to the four trophies he’s helped them to lift, the young Englishman has been at the forefront of why City have been able to maintain such consistency in the cup over the years.

Good boy, Carabao

As per The Athletic, this is actually a love affair that extends beyond the pitch, too, with Foden actually naming his dog “Carabao” in honour of what he’s been able to achieve since making his debut.

It was a decision he made after a Man of the Match performance against Aston Villa in the 2020 final as City overcame a Villa comeback to win 2-1 and further extend their Carabao Cup dominance.

Outside of Carabao themselves likely being thrilled with such a decision it’s also great to see a competition like this receiving more respect than it tends to get. Sure, one French bulldog isn’t going to immediately put it on the level of the FA Cup, but Phil Foden respects his roots and knows how important it is to honour the past.

After the 21-year-old’s goal against Wycombe last night we imagine he’ll be watching closely to see who City get in the fourth round draw which takes place later this evening.
