Unai Emery criticises Kylian Mbappe over PSG contract renewal decision

Unai Emery has criticised Kylian Mbappe after the forward made a last-minute U-turn and decided to stay at PSG rather than move to Real Madrid.

All season long, Los Blancos have eagerly awaited the opportunity to snap the Frenchman up. The gifted player has gone on record claiming that a transfer to the Bernabeu would be the dream move.

But amid mass pressure from PSG, and a lot of cash being offered to him, he has agreed to remain in the French capital.

El Chiringuito TV first reported that the club offered to make him the ‘owner of the project’, which has since been ratified by other sources.

According to reports, this will allow him to have a pivotal input on any changes to the management or potential transfers. He could choose his teammates and even select a head coach to sing to his tune.

Furthermore, he would also make a whopping amount of money. Mbappe would reportedly earn £4 million a month, with a signing bonus of £100 million. We don’t know for a fact whether he accepted under these terms, but most players would find themselves tempted by an unprecedented offer like this.

But regardless of why he made the decision, it hasn’t gone down well with the Spanish league.

La Liga to take legal action over Kylian Mbappe Real Madrid snub

Shortly before the big announcement, La Liga released a statement. They confirm that they will file a complaint over an alleged breach of finance rules.

The statement read: “LaLiga will file a complaint against PSG before UEFA, the French administrative and fiscal authorities and European Union authorities to continue to defend the economic ecosystem of European football and its sustainability.

“This type of agreement attacks the economic stability of European football, putting at risk hundreds of thousands of jobs and the integrity of the sport. It is scandalous that a club like PSG can close such an agreement while those clubs that could afford the hiring of the player without seeing their wage bill compromised are left without being able to sign him.

“PSG is assuming an impossible investment, seeing that it has an unacceptable wage bill and large financial losses in prior seasons. It is violating current UEFA and French economic control rules.”

The forward recently addressed his fans. He expressed his joy to continue playing at Parc des Princes.

He told the crowd: “I am very happy to stay at PSG in France. I always said Paris is my home, I hope we continue to play football and win trophies together. Thanks for everything. I hope that I will continue to do what I prefer to with you all, and win titles together! Thanks a lot.”

Despite his outward happiness, one of his former PSG managers has revealed that he feels disappointed with the player.

Unai Emery slates Kylian Mbappe

Unai Emery, who is currently in charge of Villarreal, coached the 23-year-old towards the end of his stint at PSG. But although he has a great deal of respect for the French star, he admitted that he thinks the move is terrible for the sport.

Speaking after his side’s 2-0 win over Barcelona, Emery said: “It’s a very personal decision, but it’s come too late. I appreciate the kid a lot, and I respect his decision. But not the timing or the way he’s made his decision. It’s not good for football.”

Emery’s feelings are certainly echoed by many in the footballing world. Mbappe has now made his final decision. However, the ramifications are sure to be felt across the football landscape for a long while to come.
