Wayne Rooney to leave Derby County with immediate effect

Wayne Rooney has left his position of manager at Derby County with immediate effect.

Rooney took over as manager of the club from previous boss Phillip Cocu in November 2020, initially on an interim basis. The following January, he was given the job full-time.

After keeping The Rams up in his first season, Rooney’s second season began with the club in turmoil. Derby were deducted 12 points by the EFL for entering administration in September, and a further nine points for financial irregularities.

Despite the off-field issues, Rooney ensured his side remained focus on the pitch. Even though they began pre-season with just nine senior players, his side recorded 55 points, which would have seen them finish in 17th place in the Championship without deductions.

The Rams eventually finished in 23rd place, relegating them to League One. And in a summer of further turmoil, characterised by US businessman Chris Kirchner’s failed takeover, Wayne Rooney will leave Derby.

Wayne Rooney’s statement

Rooney said in a statement on the club’s official website: “Over the course of the Summer I have been closely following developments regarding the ownership of Derby County.

“Today, I met with the administrators to inform them of my decision that it was time for me to leave the club. In fairness to them, they tried tremendously hard to change my decision, but my mind was made up.

“My time at the club has been a rollercoaster of emotions, both highs and lows, but I have to say that I have enjoyed the challenge.

“Personally, I feel the club now needs to be led by someone with fresh energy and not affected by the events that have happened over the last 18 months. I will remember my time at Derby with great pride and affection and would like to thank all my staff, players and of course the fans, for their incredible support. I will never forget you and hope to see you all again in the future and in happier times.”
