EXCLUSIVE: From representing Team GB in sprinting and bobsleighing, to partying with Usain Bolt, Montell Douglas has had an incredible journey.

Montell Douglas on partying with Usain Bolt

After winning a race-off to become the fastest woman in British history, with a time of 11.05 seconds, Montell Douglas flew out to Beijing, China, to represent Team GB in the 2008 Olympics, where she competed in the 100 metres, as well as the 4X100 metres relay, in which her team made the final.

Following her tremendous displays on the track, the Londoner had the opportunity to celebrate with the quickest man to have ever set foot on the face of the Earth.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Douglas chuckled: “A really cool time was partying with Usain Bolt at his 22nd birthday party. We were at the Olympic Games together. We were the same age and at our first Olympic Games. He’d just won the treble and become a history maker. It was an epic moment for everyone who watched it and everyone who was there. To be a part of that celebration is something I’ll never forget. He wasn’t the superstar Bolt, that we know now, because he’d just started out. To see how far he went, doing it three times over, is just incredible.”

Montell Douglas asked one key question before her first time bobsleighing

If representing Team GB at the Summer Olympics wasn’t a big enough achievement, ten years on, Douglas made waves for her country once again, in the bobsleigh, at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Looking back on her beginnings in sport, the 40-year-old enthused: “What do I do? I just run fast in a straight line on the track, go onto the ice, perfect, I can do that. The transition from sprinting into bobsleigh was a very steep learning curve—you can’t describe it. I went down for the first time, stood at the top of the mountain, and asked my coach, ‘Can I die’? He said, ‘Meh’, and that was enough for me. I went down and wasn’t sure that I loved it, but I did it again, because you have to do it twice, and I thought, ‘This is pretty cool’. You’re going down ice mountains; it’s a mile long. We call it Formula 1 on ice. You need incredible resilience. You have to be mentally tough or crazy to do it.”

Now, Douglas is in the role of pundit and can’t wait for this year’s games to unfold, with the icon expecting a plethora of Team GB stars, including skeleton world champion Matt Weston, to win gold.

And like herself, there are plenty of British athletes who could thrive in any environment, with the 2x Olympian claiming she’d love one of the representatives to join her on Gladiators.

She laughed: “I would go with Adele Nicoll, she’s made history in the first-ever female monobob for Team GB, she’s my old teammate, we’d have to do it. She’s an absolute beast, so strong, powerful, smart, and all about girl power. I need her on my team.”
