Who is Amit Bhatia? The man leading Liverpool’s £4.5bn takeover consortium

Amit Bhatia is the British-Indian businessman leading the consortium closing in on a minority stake in Liverpool. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is among his backers. The 46-year-old is the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Amit Bhatia also spent 18 seasons as a co-owner of Queens Park Rangers.

Reports on Monday indicated that Fenway Sports Group had struck an agreement with the group, according to Football365, in a deal valuing the Reds at more than $6billion (£4.5bn).

Yet the man at the centre of it is a good deal less famous than the names bankrolling him.

Who is Amit Bhatia and how did he make his money?

The 46-year-old began his working life at Morgan Stanley before branching into construction, real estate and private equity, as Sky Sports reports.

His marriage into the Mittal family placed the financier alongside one of the most astronomical fortunes in British business. Lakshmi Mittal built the world’s largest steelmaking empire. It is that family money reported to be underwriting the Anfield move.

Bhatia is not, however, a newcomer being parachuted into English football. Far from it.

Amit Bhatia spent 18 seasons at QPR before the Liverpool move

Amit Bhatia joined Queens Park Rangers in 2007 and served as vice-chairman. He took the chairmanship in 2018. He was also on the board when the west London club got over the line and into the Premier League in 2010/11.

That association ended on 21 July 2026, when QPR announced his exit. He agreed to transfer his ownership to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam. Bhatia said he was stepping back with “pride, gratitude and affection”.

The timing was not lost on anyone. Within weeks, the former Rangers chairman was named as the man leading a bid for one of the biggest clubs on the planet.

What happens next for FSG and Liverpool

Crucially, this is a minority investment rather than a takeover. FSG, controlled by John Henry, bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300m. The Americans would retain control.

There is a template for it, too: the Reds sold a small stake to Dynasty Equity in 2023 in a deal reported at £164m.

An announcement is expected in the coming days, according to reports, though the parties have yet to confirm terms publicly. Read more on Jeff Bezos nearing the Liverpool deal.
