Why is John Fury banned from the USA? Find out why the head of the Fury family will be unable to travel to support his son Tommy when he faces Jake Paul in August.
The head of the family
John Fury is the patriarch of the Fury family. Whenever Tyson Fury or Tommy Fury are fighting, John is there.
A former professional boxer himself, the 58-year-old is one of the most recognisable faces in the sport. John Fury will always back his children and has often gotten into spats with their opponents.
More recently, Fury went after Jake Paul on social media ahead of Paul’s fight with Tommy Fury on August 6th. Fury is Tyson and Tommy’s biggest supporter.
Unable to support Tommy in America
Tommy Fury is set to fight Jake Paul in Madison Square Garden on August 6th. The full details of the fight are yet to be confirmed, but the location of the venue would mean John Fury cannot be there in person to support his son.
John Fury received an 11-year jail sentence in 2011, after being found guilty of the violent gouging of Oathie Sykes’ eyes, leaving him half-blind. This crime occurred during a brawl at a car auction.
Fury served four-and-a-half years of his sentence and was released in 2015. His criminal record stops him from being able to cross the Atlantic.
He has been consistently denied a visa, meaning he has been unable to attend Tyson’s fights in the United States. Now, it looks as though he will have to watch Tommy’s bout with Paul from afar.
Tyson Fury is also unable to attend Tommy’s fight
Tommy’s brother, and heavyweight champion, Tyson will also be absent from Madison Square Garden on August 6th. This is due to his links with Daniel Kinahan.
Kinahan is a notorious mob boss who the US Treasury sanctioned for a litany of crimes in April. In the past, Fury has posted pictures on social media with Kinahan.
Tyson has been informed that even if he attempts to distance himself from Kinahan, he will still not be granted entry to the USA.
The US government are cracking down on figures such as Kinahan, and it has been reported that more than 600 people are banned from entering the country due to their association with him.
Fury was refused entry to the USA last Friday due to this link, and it is understood that these restrictions will still be in place by the time Tommy’s fight in New York comes round.
Tommy Fury confirms Jake Paul fight
This morning, Tommy Fury posted a video on social media confirming that both he and Jake Paul have signed the contracts on the fight for August 6th.
While Madison Square Garden looks to be the likely venue, this is yet to be officially confirmed. Fury stated in his video that both fighters will undergo extensive drug testing ahead of the bout and reiterated the key date of August 6th.
This followed Jake Paul’s claims last night that Fury was attempting to pull out of the fight. The American stated that Fury was unwilling to box due to the absence of his family.
While both John and Tyson will not be there, Tommy has committed to the fight, and the countdown has started until August 6th.
