Why Man United fans are beginning to turn against Edinson Cavani

After a cracking first campaign with Manchester United, Edinson Cavani had all the ingredients to cement himself as a club legend. But fast forward a season, and his value with the fans has plummeted.

After signing for The Red Devils, the Uruguayan sensation instantly hit the ground running. He scored his first goal in a 3-1 win against Everton before bagging two finishes against Southampton, including a late winner. He then carried his momentum throughout the season and finished the same way he had kicked off.

In April, Cavani bagged five goals and three-man of the match awards, prior to scoring in the Europa League final against Villarreal in May. Ultimately, he concluded the season with 17 goals and six assists.

The fans adored him and gleefully chanted his name as they watched on from the stands. But despite it looking like he’d solidify himself as an Old Trafford mainstay, the supporters have begun to lose patience.

Why have Manchester United fans turned on Edinson Cavani?

Last season, the prolific forward emerged as a vital part of the club’s attack. During his 39 appearances, he used his superb first touch, footballing IQ and eye for goal to assert himself in every game he played. But this campaign, his contributions to the starting XI have been few and far between.

The 35-year-old has only graced the pitch on 17 occasions and has hit the back of the net just twice. In addition, only seven of these have occurred during this calendar year. However, he has managed to represent his country on four occasions.

Throughout 2022, he’s struggled with injuries, the most recent of which occurred during international duty in March. Cavani left the pitch after sustaining a knock to his calf against Chile. Fans point to his commitment to Uruguay as proof of how little he cares about United. They also bring up his wages; his weekly pay is around £250k.

Mark Goldbridge has his say on the Edinson Cavani situation

This string of absences has resulted in United fan YouTubers such as Mark Goldbridge voicing their opinion. The controversial social media star praised the player for his ability but slated his dedication.

During a video with The United Stand, the influential personality said: “I think it’s a disgrace, an absolute disgrace. His attitude towards this football club, his inability to get himself fit, but yet he’ll be fit for Uruguay is like a s**t sandwich.

“He was literally not available for about two months before the international break, goes on the international break plays, comes back, and he’s not available for another two months. Disgusting, really disgusting.”

He later added: “You’ve got Cavani who can’t even be a**ed to put a United shirt on. Now I’m sure he can produce the medical records, which is another reason in itself. But I think it’s dodgy, it’s really dodgy, that in January he wanted to leave and then we didn’t let him leave, and since January, he’s hardly put a shirt on, yet he’s fit for the international break.”

Cavani has proved himself as one of the best strikers on the planet. But fans are quick to point out that talent means nothing if he’s unavailable for selection.

The forward has been linked with moves to La Liga clubs, including Atletico Madrid. He is expected to leave United in the summer.
