Why Rey Mysterio was pulled from the 2023 Royal Rumble

Despite his entrance music playing, ‘The Biggest Little Man in WWE’ never made it to the Royal Rumble this year, begging the question, ‘What happened to Rey Mysterio’?

Since winning the event in 2006, fans have looked forward to seeing what the three-time world champion has in store. With high-flying manoeuvres and an innate ability to eliminate men twice his size, the Mexican always guarantees entertainment. But when his name was announced as 2023’s 17th entrant, he was nowhere to be seen.

Clearly bemused, the commentary team didn’t know what to make of his absence. However, 90 seconds later, the picture became a lot clearer. Dominik Mysterio emerged with his dad’s mask, indicating that he and the Judgement Day had assaulted the great, rendering him unable to participate in the 30-man match.

But, of course, that’s only an explanation from a storyline perspective.

Why wasn’t Rey Mysterio in the 2023 Royal Rumble?

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, the 48-year-old couldn’t compete due to an undisclosed injury. This reportedly occurred during his victory over Karrion Kross on WWE Smackdown.

The journalist confirmed: “It isn’t anything serious, but I guess it was serious enough that he couldn’t do what was planned in the match.”

He added that Mysterio was scheduled to set up a match at Wrestlemania. However, for the time being, that will have to wait. Fans can now only hope that their hero is back in fighting shape by the time the most significant event in the wrestling calendar rolls around.
