Georginio Wijnaldum has claimed that Liverpool didn’t make the Dutchman feel like they wanted to keep him on the books.
After five successful years at Anfield that saw him play a pivotal role in the club’s Premier League and Champions League triumphs, Wijnadlum left the Reds in favour of a move to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer. There had been a great deal of speculation as to whether he’d stay or go but in the end, the 30-year-old wound up with the French giants alongside the likes of Neymar, Sergio Ramos, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
The Gini curiosity
Now, during a recent interview with L’Equipe, Wijnaldum has decided to spill the tea on how he felt about his departure.
“You follow your feeling,” he said.
“Several months ago, I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without going into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to keep me. In these cases, we have to move forward.”
“I had a good idea to commit to Barca. But the negotiations lasted a very long time and Paris came in.
“Unlike six years earlier, the club showed me their desire to recruit me. It was time for me to have something else.”
While it may seem like Wijnaldum is “throwing shade” in the direction of his former club, he doesn’t come across as that kind of player. Instead, he’s simply giving his side of the story in what appeared to be quite a complicated situation.
Either way, all parties got what they wanted in the end.
