In news certain to delight British based WWE fans, the sports entertainment behemoth have today (April 2nd) announced that Premium Live Event Clash At The Castle is returning to the UK this summer, emanating from the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday June 15th.
The event marks the first ever Premium Live Event WWE have hosted in Scotland and, as if that wasn’t enough, the Hydro will also be the venue of choice for SmackDown the night before the Clash, on Friday June 14th.
The first Clash took place in Cardiff back in September 2022, in front of a sold out crowd of 62,296 at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital. That night saw Roman Reigns just about overcome the challenge of Drew McIntyre in order to retain his Undisputed WWE Universal Title. With more than a little bit of help from the main roster debut of his cousin Solo Sikoa.
And while he was unsuccessful in his pursuit of World Championship gold that night in Cardiff, almost two years later, Drew McIntyre will be aiming to stride triumphantly into his hometown as the reigning, defending World Heavyweight Champion, with his WrestleMania showdown against current champion Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins looming on the immediate horizon.
The prospect of McIntyre main eventing as champion (or as challenger once again. Who knows?) could make for one of the most memorable WWE events to ever take place on British shores. Of course, the memories of SummerSlam ’92 at Wembley Stadium and British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith’s heroic Intercontinental Title victory over Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart still resonate warmly for so many UK fans, over 30 years later. Imagine the reaction from a Glaswegian crowd to McIntyre holding World Title gold aloft.
Announcing the history making weekend, WWE President Nick Khan said, “We are excited to bring both Friday Night SmackDown and Clash At The Castle: Scotland to our amazing fans in Scotland at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow this June. The world will see that this is one of the UK’s best venues and Scottish crowds are some of the loudest, craziest and most passionate on the planet.”
As well as the aforementioned and heavily controversial McIntyre, Scotland is home to several other WWE Superstars including Alba Fyre, Isla Dawn, Piper Niven, Nikki Cross, Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey, Wolfgang and Noam Dar.
At the time of the original Clash At The Castle event, the show became the most-viewed and highest-rated international Premium Live Event in WWE history. No pressure then, Glasgow.
