WWE releases 2022: Several top NXT UK stars released, show rebrand announced

Several NXT UK stars have been released from their WWE contracts, including Welshman Mark Andrews.

In 2018, the world’s premier wrestling promotion incepted the biggest show on our shores. The programme has given fans many more events to attend, while providing the performers an opportunity to showcase their skills. It also gave them a chance to develop and work their way up to the big leagues.

However, the company have decided to shake things up with a rebrand, and have consequently released several top NXT stars from their contracts.

One of the major WWE releases is that of Welsh star Mark Andrews. The 30-year-old made the semi-final of the WWE UK Championship tournament in 2017. In addition, he made history as the first Welsh champion in the promotion when he clinched the tag team belts alongside Flash Morgan Webster. Some fans believed he could make an appearance at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff next month, but that appears to be off the table now.

Andrews last competed on July 28 for his old title, where he and Wild Boar unsuccessfully challenged Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs. Jensen and Briggs appeared at NXT Heatwave earlier this week, suggesting they are moving to the brand.

‘The Heartbreak Kid’ said: “Following the success of our live events and talent identification efforts throughout all of Europe, we believe this is the perfect time to expand NXT beyond the UK.”

NXT UK was notoriously a proving ground for stars such as Rhea Ripley, Doudrop and Gunther to establish themselves in WWE. Therefore, fans will hope that the European extension can uncover a few more hidden gems.
