Xavi has confessed that he ‘feels bad’ about Barcelona selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea on deadline day.
Following disciplinary issues at Arsenal early last season, the Gabonese striker made his move to the Nou Camp. And the change of scenery looked to have revitalised the forward. He looked back to his best, producing blistering runs, creating opportunities and scoring 13 goals in 24 appearances.
However, he has fallen victim to the club’s financial crisis. Throughout the transfer window, ‘La Blaugrana’ made it their mission to reclaim their place as one of the best teams on the planet. And to do that, they needed to sign a plethora of players, which they have done.
The fans joyfully welcomed the likes of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski into the team with open arms. But this left the club’s already low bank balance in a bit of a sticky area. In order to register these new stars, they needed to part with others. And unfortunately, Aubameyang had to go.
Xavi didn’t want to lose Aubameyang
Chelsea signed their rival’s former player for £10 million, plus Marcos Alonso. And the situation has left the Barcelona gaffer feeling very remorseful.
As per Metro, he said: “I feel bad because he helped us a lot. He was an example on and off the pitch.”
Xavi continued: “He made a big difference – look at his numbers. As a person, he’s a jewel and always training with a smile on his face.
“It’s a shame because you want to have these types of players in your squad, but it was a good opportunity for him and for the club as well.
“We needed to put the pieces of the puzzle together and in the end, I think we’re all happy. But I feel bad as a coach to lose a player like Aubameyang. He was an example for the club and for all players.”
