Alan Shearer divides opinion with comments on Erling Haaland and Harry Kane

Nobody knows the art of scoring goals quite like Alan Shearer, but his verdict on Erling Haaland and Harry Kane has caused mass debate.

Since his arrival at the Etihad, the Norwegian superstar has torn the Premier League apart. He’s utilised his phenomenal strength and incredible footballing IQ en route to bagging a total of 15 goals in just nine appearances in the competition.

Thus far the Norwegian has broken records, made experienced defenders look like complete novices and bagged several hattricks, including one against Manchester United. But regardless of his success, Shearer believes England’s number one forward could’ve done the exact same thing.

Kane openly admitted his desire to join Manchester City in 2021. But despite the club showing an interest, the deal never materialised and the 29-year-old remained at Tottenham.

Currently, the two players stand as the top goalscorers in the league. However, the Spurs man trails his rival by seven, although, Shearer believes things could be very different.

Alan Shearer gives his take on Erling Haaland and Harry Kane

While the Brit may not have recorded the same statistics, it’s fair to say he’s not working with the same service. Consequeently, Shearer believes that if Kane had Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden to provide him with chances, his tally would shoot through the roof.

“It could all have been very different if Pep Guardiola got his way last season and they’d signed Harry Kane,” writes Shearer in The Athletic.

He continued: “There might not have been room for Haaland, and he may have been carrying out these incredible goalscoring feats somewhere else.

“But if Harry was in this City team, he would be scoring as many goals as Erling has. This is dreamland for any top forward. I’ve said it all along — a top goalscorer in this City team should score 40 goals. If Erling stays fit, then he’ll get that and maybe even some more.

“Harry’s record tells you that he would do that, too. There’s no doubt what Pep thinks about Harry and what the vast majority of other people think about him as well. He is a top goalscorer: he’s got eight in nine league games so far, which we’d be talking about a lot more if it wasn’t for Erling.”

Shearer’s controversial comments have sparked mixed opinions on Twitter with some fans agreeing and others thinking he’s lost the plot.
