Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has given his thoughts on the size of the task at hand for the club’s new owners.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is set to take Newcastle United forward in a brand new direction after the Magpies spent almost 15 years under the rule of Mike Ashley. The scenes on Tyneside last night just go to show what a move like this can do for the confidence of any given club and now, it’s all about seeing whether or not the new owners can follow through on their promise to revitalise this sleeping giant.
The hard work starts now
Shearer, who has been vocal about Ashley and the state of Newcastle for many years now, spoke this morning about what they need to do both on and off the pitch in order to keep supporters on their side.

“I think it’s important that they don’t just spend it on the team. I think the ground is shabby, it needs improving, the training ground needs improving, they’re going to invest in the city, which is a great thing for our people here in Newcastle because I think this city deserves that. But, there’s no doubt they need new players in. They need another three or four to help them get out of that battle they’re in [relegation] and I’m sure they’ll do that in January, but we need another goalscorer, another centre-half, and also a creative midfielder. But that’s easier said than done!”
For the time being, the focus will likely shift towards the future of Steve Bruce and whether or not he’ll be the man in charge for their first game after the international break against Tottenham.
