Unsurprisingly, his heroics at St James’ Park caught the attention of a sporting superstar.
WOW: What was it really like to play with Alan Shearer?… The legend’s former strike partner tells all
Alan Shearer would’ve loved to have played with Pelé
Having won three World Cups and solidified his status as one of the most gifted footballers to have ever laced up the boots, Pelé has earned his place in the history books forever.
Long after retiring, the Brazilian continued to watch ‘the beautiful game’, with the icon blown away by Alan Shearer.
In a 2003 interview with The Northern Echo, he enthused: “I have known Alan Shearer a long time, he is the kind of guy I would want in my team.
“I like him very much as a person, and he is an excellent example.”
While Pele passed away in 2022, his legacy will never be forgotten, with fans around the world still regarding him as possibly the number one player the sport has ever seen.
With that in mind, Shearer, who’s now managing Wembley Rangers AFC in the Baller League, was touched by what the phenom said about him.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, the former Newcastle United star reacted: “If there’s one player you’d like to play with or against, it would’ve been him, because of his aura. I’ve been lucky enough to meet him, talk to him, and interview him when he was here, bless him. He was the best, so if I could’ve played with one player, then I guess it would’ve been him.”
Alan Shearer reveals what it’s really like managing with Ian Wright
Blessed with a fantastic footballing IQ, Shearer is loving every minute of passing down his knowledge to the next generation at Wembley Rangers AFC.
And he’s not alone at the helm, as Ian Wright has joined him for the ride.
Discussing what it’s like to work with the Arsenal hero, he laughed: “What’s the best word? — Interesting. He’s a great character. He loves this, and we love our team. They try hard. ‘Wrighty’ is as passionate as anyone. He loves his football. We love each other. And he’s a great lad.”
