Jamie Carragher slates Carl Rushworth

Throughout his career, Carl Rushworth has proven his class in abundance. However, tonight’s match is one he’d rather forget.

After just 15 minutes, Kai Havertz produced a tremendous effort to put his side ahead.

Shortly after, Bukayo Saka got the better of the Coventry goalkeeper to double Arsenal’s lead.

However, it was the third goal that really opened up the shot-stopper to major backlash.

Rushworth got a hand to a strike from Martin Odegaard but couldn’t prevent it from going into the back of the net. And unsurprisingly, Jamie Carragher wasn’t impressed.

But while he took aim at the blunder, the former Liverpool star conceded that the 25-year-old still has a lot left to give.

During the Sky Sports broadcast, the legend exclaimed: “The goalkeeper has got to do better. It was almost like a double hit from Odegaard. There was talk in the studio about the goalkeeper for the second goal; maybe that was a little harsh, it wasn’t easy, but he’s got to do better there — he has to. Rushworth was fantastic last season in the Championship. Coventry were delighted to get that signing over the line, and I’m sure that will prove wise business.”

Fans react to Carl Rushworth mistake against Arsenal

Of course, fans took to social media to give their take on what had happened.

One said: “Martin Odegaard adds the third for the champions after four second-half minutes. A scuffed right-footed effort beat Carl Rushworth, who will feel he should have done better. Arsenal in control.”

Another added: “Martin Ødegaard drills a low right-footed finish from open play, assisted by Ben White. Carl Rushworth gets the least enjoyable front-row seat in football.”
