Everton will not play proposed match at Goodison Park

On Saturday, Preston North End defeated Huddersfield Town in a dramatic showdown. After the sides couldn’t be separated, ‘The Lilywhites’ emerged victorious 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

While Preston were the home side, they weren’t actually playing at their own ground, with the North West team using Goodison Park because Deepdale is undergoing a £1.5 million hybrid pitch installation.

Ironically, following the match Everton were drawn to play against Preston as the away team, opening up the possibility of the Liverpudlian side having to return to Goodison Park as the visitors.

However, despite speculation, it looks unlikely that the fixture will take place in Liverpool. The work currently going on at Deepdale is progressing well, with the pitch set to be ready for the Championship club’s first home league fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 22, with the clash with Everton set to go down on the week commencing August 24.

The news will undoubtedly break the hearts of supporters who fancied gracing the stadium one last time. However, the experience of being the away side would’ve been truly bizarre.

At least Everton fans have a fantastic day out at Deepdale to look forward to.
