Cristiano Ronaldo has been on the receiving end of criticism from an old Manchester United teammate.

The football legend has undeniably cemented his status as one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game. However, following Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, both fans and pundits are wondering whether the icon is a hindrance to his country.

Having played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford, Nicky Butt knows just how good the natural-born goal-scorer is. However, with the superstar now past his prime, the Englishman doesn’t think it’s right that he continues to play such a crucial role for Portugal.

During an episode of The Good, The Bad and The Football, Paul Scholes asked his co-host: “For a 41-year-old to be playing centre-forward, I just don’t get it. You might get away with it at centre-half, you might do with a team that keeps the ball, but at centre-forward at 41, do you think he’s being a little bit selfish?”

Refusing to hold back, Butt replied: “I think so, yeah, but you know what he’s like.”

Regardless of how Ronaldo performs throughout the rest of the World Cup, there’s no denying he’s a shadow of the man who once dominated the sport.

However, even at his best, there were players out there who could give the footballing wizard a run for his money.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, a former Liverpool star claimed Arjen Robben was tougher to play against than Ronaldo.
