Note to self – never roll the ball away when Cristiano Ronaldo is about to take a penalty.
The man known by many as CR7 has had a pretty chaotic week or so after it was confirmed that he’ll be returning to play for Manchester United, twelve years on from when he last performed in that famous red shirt.
Then, last night, he made history by becoming the all-time top goalscorer in men’s international football thanks to two dramatic late goals against Ireland.
The headers handed his native Portugal a 2-1 win over the Irish that takes them one big step closer towards qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
Should Ronaldo have seen red?
Before that, though, the hosts had an opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot after a silly challenge on Bruno Fernandes gifted Ronaldo the chance to break the aforementioned record.
The spot kick was eventually saved by Manchester City teenager Gavin Bazunu but prior to that, defender Dara O’Shea received a slap on the arm after rolling the ball away just before Ronaldo took the penalty.
"He probably shouldn't raise his arms but it's nothing dangerous."

Was Cristiano Ronaldo fortunate to stay on the pitch after raising his hands to Dara O'Shea before he missed his first-half penalty? ? pic.twitter.com/tvAvSV1o7Z
Cristiano isn’t exactly known for holding his tongue when he sees something he doesn’t like on the football pitch but given how long he’s been in the game, you’d think he would’ve been a bit more careful in what could’ve easily been an incident that earned him a card.
